2 children were among the seriously injured in a crash at Lake Macquarie overnight.

A five-year-old girl and her 6-week-old sister were among three people seriously injured in a crash at Lake Macquarie overnight.

About 9.15pm (Monday 19 October 2020), emergency services were called to Bareki Road near Eleebana Road, Eleebana, following reports of a head-on crash involving two cars.

It is believed a blue Honda Civic sedan travelling in a southerly direction failed to negotiate a bend and crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and collided with a silver Ford Mondeo sedan, travelling in the opposite direction.

The 46-year-old male driver of the Civic was trapped before being freed by emergency services. He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before being conveyed to John Hunter Hospital with serious internal injuries. He remains in a critical condition.

The 36-year-old male driver and 31-year-old front seat passenger of the Ford Mondeo sedan were not injured during the crash; the 5-year-old and 6-week-old girls seated in the back seat suffered head injuries.

Both girls were taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment. The six-week-old girl remains in a critical condition.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District established a crime scene, while the Hunter Region Crash Investigation Unit have commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

As investigations continue, police are appealing to anyone who might have been in the area of Eleebana Rd around 9.15pm last night and has dash-cam footage, to come forward.
