39-year-old man arrested over alleged car theft.

Police will allege:

About 4:30pm on Monday 21 September 2020 a Mercedes was stolen from an address in Newcastle. The stealing was captured on CCTV.

About 8:20am on Tuesday a member of the public contacted police after sighting the vehicle in Railway Street, Cooks Hill.

Police attached to the Proactive Crime Team at Newcastle City located the 39-year-old male depicted in the CCTV footage nearby. He was arrested and charged at Newcastle Police Station.

search warrant was conducted at his residence in Cooks Hill and property contained within the stolen car was found in his unit.

Maximum penalty

In NSW, stealing a motor vehicle or vessel is an offence and one that is taken very seriously.

As such, it carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail and up to $11,000 fine according to section 154F Crimes Act 1900 (NSW).
