$600 Million Kurri Kurri gas fired power plant does not include gas pipe line

The Prime Minister Scott Morrison unveiled plans for a $600 million dollar gas fired power station at Kurri Kurri last May, labeled as the Coalitions gas lead recovery.

But what the Government failed to mention was that the price tag was just for the power station and does not include the gas pipeline from the Power Station to the Sydney-Newcastle trunk line or the gas storage pipeline required to be hydrogen ready.

The total cost of the project could balloon to well over $1 billion to make the plant hydrogen ready.

Documents revealed the pipeline to connect the Kurri Kurri power station to the existing NSW gas transmission network is being undertaken as a separate project by Snowy Hydro.

Newly submitted documents show that quote from APA Transmission for the 24km pipeline is approximately $264 million and will create 398 jobs during construction and 5 full time jobs once the pipeline is operational.

The documents also revealed that a significant increase in capital expenditure would be required to construct the storage pipeline for it to be capable of storing a hydrogen blended fuel.
