Axe-Wielding Parolee Arrested After Police Pursuit in Lake Macquarie

A 34-year-old man, previously disqualified from holding a license until 2028, faced a slew of charges after a dramatic attempt to evade police in Lake Macquarie.

On Thursday, February 29th, 2024, authorities responded to reports of an individual wielding an axe, allegedly smashing a window of a brown Ford Territory on Victory Parade, Toronto.

At 9:35 am, officers from Lake Macquarie Highway Patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description on Five Islands Road, Teralba, amidst heavy traffic. Despite police attempts to intervene on T C Frith Avenue, the vehicle recklessly evaded, resulting in a collision with multiple vehicles after veering onto the wrong side of the road.

The male driver fled the scene but later surrendered to police after a perimeter was established. Following his arrest, he underwent blood and urine testing at a hospital before being taken to Toronto Police Station.

A search of the vehicle uncovered the hatchet in the driver’s footwell, leading to numerous charges, including police pursuit, driving while disqualified, and possession of an offensive implement. Additionally, he faced charges from a prior incident in the Maitland area.

Given his parole status, authorities alerted Community Corrections, revealing his failure to comply with conditions since his release from prison in December 2023 for similar offenses. Consequently, he was denied bail and scheduled to appear before Toronto Local Court.

Further charges are pending based on the outcome of testing and trespassing on private property during the escape.
