In an early morning incident yesterday, seven teenagers have been apprehended and charged following alleged pursuits in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.
At around 2:30 am on Monday, February 26, 2024, authorities attempted to halt a Hyundai Santa Fe and a BMW X1 on Minmi Road, Cameron Park. Both vehicles, suspected to be stolen, reportedly evaded police orders, initiating a pursuit towards Edgeworth.
The chase escalated when the Hyundai was abandoned at Main Road, Edgeworth, with the occupants transferring to the BMW. Allegedly, the BMW then rammed a police vehicle before speeding off towards Cardiff. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the pursuit was eventually called off.
Later in the morning, at approximately 8:20 am, police spotted the vehicle on the Golden Highway at Mt Thorley, prompting another pursuit. With the deployment of road spikes, the vehicle was forced to a halt at Sandy Hollow, resulting in the arrest of all seven teenagers.
The teens, aged between 13 and 16, were taken into custody at Muswellbrook Police Station. Charges include offenses such as driving dangerously, dishonestly obtaining property by deception, and being carried in a conveyance without consent.
Four of the teenagers, including a 13-year-old, two 15-year-olds, and a 16-year-old, were denied bail and are scheduled to appear before a children’s court today, February 27, 2024.
Additionally, a 16-year-old boy and girl were granted strict conditional bail and are set to appear before a children’s court on March 27, 2024. Meanwhile, a 15-year-old girl has been addressed under the Young Offenders Act.
