Breaking News Update: Man Charged After High-Speed Pursuit in Newcastle

A man has been apprehended following a high-speed pursuit through the streets of Newcastle. The incident unfolded around 11:20 am this morning when vigilant police officers patrolling Brown Street spotted a white Toyota Hilux suspected to have been stolen from a Nelson Bay residence on January 27, 2024.

As officers approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly collided with a parked car before fleeing the scene at high speed. A pursuit ensued, weaving through Honeysuckle Drive toward Hannell Street before authorities made the decision to terminate the chase.

Shortly after, the abandoned Hilux was discovered in the rail corridor near Newcastle Interchange. Thanks to valuable tips from the public, a 39-year-old man was swiftly located and arrested on Beaumont Street.

Upon searching the vehicle, law enforcement seized five paintball guns and associated gear, believed to be stolen from a Cooranbong establishment earlier this week.

The suspect, identified as a Windale resident, was transported to Newcastle Police Station and slapped with a litany of charges, including reckless driving during a police pursuit, operating a vehicle while disqualified, unlawful use of a vehicle, failure to report property damage, and possession of paintball equipment outside authorized venues.

He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear before Newcastle Local Court tomorrow, February 8, 2024. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
