COUNCILLOR HALLIDAY TO RESCIND MAYOR BAKERS CUTS TO RED BIN SERVICES

Liberal Central Ward Councillor Sally Halliday has submitted her intention to rescind plans by Maitland Mayor Loretta Baker to cut red bins from a weekly service to a fortnightly service from 2024.

On 25 May 2021 the Mayor used a Mayoral Minute to further endorse an earlier motion moved by Labor Councillors on April 27 to cut red bin services by half as part of the council’s Food Organics and Garden Organics program (FOGO). No consultation was conducted with the community prior to the decision.
Cr Halliday feels that the community has been left out of the decision with many households not able to provide feedback to their local councillor prior to a decision being made.

As part of Cr Halliday’s Rescission motion, council would re-confirm their commitment to FOGO which includes food and garden organic waste being collected in green bins from 2024.

Council would also undertake community consultation on all four options available within the April 27 report. Submissions and community feedback would return to council for determination by the end of the year.

“It is disappointing that the community were left out of this decision. By rescinding this decision, it allows us to go back to the community and hear their concerns. It is so important that we are transparent with this.”

“Why do the community consultation after the decision was already made? “

“We don’t do this with other items, so I don’t know why the rush to push this through without talking to our rate payers. We need to restore community confidence and transparency back in to our council.”

“There are a wide range of options available. It’s important that the community have
a chance to see all options available and have a say on this matter.”
