JOB SEEKER PAYMENT TO BE ASSESSED AGAINST PARTNERS INCOME

Many people will miss out on the job seeker safety net because these payments will be assessed against your partners income according to Joel Fitzgibbon.

This morning we learned that those who lose their jobs due to Coronavirus(including casuals) will have their partner’s income assessed when applying for the Jobseeker Payment (unemployment benefit). That will knock out many if not most. I just spoke about it in the Parliament, we are trying to fix it. Maybe a cap on spousal income so those with partners on very high incomes can’t access it but our local people can.

This is just not good enough in today’s world where a double income is barely enough survive everyone who is affected should be eligible temporary to get through the hard times ahead.
