Liberal Councillors calling on Maitland Council to support proposal for Kurri Kurri gas power generator

Two Maitland Liberal Councillors Sally Halliday and Mitchell Griffin will be calling on Maitland Council to support a proposal for a gas power generator to be built at Kurri Kurri at the next ordinary meeting.

On September 14, the Federal Government proposed the possibility of the generator at the
old Kurri Kurri Smelter Site should the Liddell Coal Power Station not be replaced in 2023.

Councillors Griffin and Halliday feel this is an opportunity for the Maitland community and
Council to get behind and endorse.

“This site would be only minutes from Maitland creating hundreds of direct jobs, and thousands of jobs in supporting industries. Why wouldn’t we want this opportunity for our community?”, said Cr Mitchell Griffin.

“This would help attract private investment and funding to our region. It would make Maitland and Cessnock the powerhouse of NSW. Gas also emits 50% less emissions than coal which is a win for our environment”, said Cr Sally Halliday.

The notice of motion calls on council to write a letter to the Prime Minister The Hon. Scott Morrison and Minister for Energy The Hon. Angus Taylor endorsing the proposal for a gas generator for Kurri Kurri.
