Man Arrested for Transmitting Child Abuse Material via Social Media

A 19-year-old man is set to appear in court after being arrested for allegedly circulating child abuse material through social media. The arrest follows a thorough investigation initiated by officers from the Child Protection Unit in the St George Police Area Command, stemming from the discovery of incriminating material in Rockdale last October.

In October 2023, authorities launched an investigation into the dissemination of child abuse material via social media platforms after confiscating devices containing such material at a residence in Rockdale. The inquiry, spearheaded by officers from the Child Protection Unit within the St George Police Area Command, intensified over subsequent months.

Following extensive investigative efforts, which involved collaboration with the Hunter Valley Police District and the Digital Forensic Unit, law enforcement officers apprehended the suspect at an address on Osborn Avenue, Muswellbrook, around 9:40 a.m. on February 20, 2024. At the scene, authorities seized several mobile phones and three computers as part of the ongoing investigation.

The 19-year-old suspect was transported to Muswellbrook Police Station, where he was formally charged with two counts of utilizing a carriage service to transmit, publish, or promote child abuse material. Despite the gravity of the charges, the accused was granted conditional bail pending his appearance at Muswellbrook Local Court scheduled for Tuesday, February 27, 2024.
