Man faces jail time over Rugby League Brawl

Case Summary:

A man faces serious jail time over an ugly rugby league brawl between Dora Creek and West Wallsend which has seen five players banned and one club kicked out of the competition. Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District attended, however, those involved had dispersed


Offender:

  • The offender is a 22-year-old man from the Hunter.

Victims

  • The victim suffered a broken eye socket and a fractured nose. Reported by The Newcastle News

  • Assault occasioning actual bodily harm


Bail and Court Dates:

  • Police refused bail, until he faced Newcastle Court today, the outcome is unkown at this stage.

Police will allege:

Just before 5pm on Saturday (19 September 2020), police were called to a sporting ground on Minnie Street, Dora Creek, after reports of a physical altercation.

Following extensive inquiries, a 22-year-old man attended Newcastle Police Station about 8.30am today (Monday 28 September 2020) where he was arrested.

Maximum penalty

Affray is considered a serious criminal offence, carrying a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment if the accused is convicted in the District Court. In case the conviction is held in the Local Court, the maximum penalty imposed is of 2 years imprisonment.

Assault occasioning actual bodily harm attracts a maximum penalty of 5 years imprisonment, or 7 years if committed in company
