MAYOR BAKER’S 2024 GARBAGE POLICY STINKS

Maitland City Council has voted to implement a controversial waste collection policy from 2024 which will see household waste bins collected fortnightly whilst introducing food scraps into the green waste bin which will now be emptied weekly.

All ALP (Baker, Aitchison, Meskauskas, Whiting, Ferris) and Libs Ben Mitchell and Kanchan Ranadive all voted in favor of changing the garbage collection policy, Cr Halliyday, Cr Griffin and team Penfold voted against.

The same councillors also voted against a council bulk waste collection service.

Mayor Baker said that putting food scraps into your green waste bin will reduce your general waste bin by 40%.

When food scraps are introduced to our green bins, there will be even less rubbish in red bins – approximately 40% less.

Mayor Baker

The Council has acknowledged some households which have small children or medical waste would need special consideration, which would create a logical nightmare for Council if some houses require weekly collection.

Reducing general waste by up to 40% by adding food scraps to your green bin and emptying general bins every fortnight could leave your red bin at risk of overflowing and spilling out onto the street.

Residents with animals who need to dispose of waste such as kitty litter and dog poop could leave your bin stinky and a breeding ground for maggots, yuck.

Not only will rubbish be overflowing from the average household rubbish bin, residents will be required to separate food scraps from your general rubbish and recycling which is just a ridiculous expectation from already time poor residents.

How will they provide this extra support to young familys? Will they have to prove they have a young children and apply for a service that should already be provided by Council.

No community consultation was done before council adopted this radical change to garbage collection and id say this was done by design as this proposal would never pass the pub test.
