NET ZERO BY 2030 WILL DESTROY SOME OF THE HIGHEST PAYING JOBS IN THE HUNTER REGION.

Many people argue why should we care about the coal industry when it does not employ as many people as other sectors. Whilst it’s true the coal industry does not employ as many people as the hospitality and retail industries in the Hunter Region, but the one fact that nobody can deny is that all jobs are not created equal. A person who works in the coal industry would have to work three to four jobs to maintain their current rate of pay in the Hospitality or Retail sectors.

Labors 2030 net zero target effectively does nothing for the environment the key word according to Joel Fitzgibbion is “NET” which means you can still pollute as long you offset it with something good for the environment is like an arsonist saying they helped fight the fire they started but the damage is still done to environment.

For the coal industry to survive beyond 2030 labor would need a plan to offset emissions created by burning and mining coal either by planting trees or using carbon capture technology which Labor just does not have plan to do.

If we cannot offset the emissions the coal mines and coal plants create we have to switch to greener energy which is far more expensive for the consumer and business driving up the price of everything expect your income. According to the Climate Change Council the only way to achieve NET ZERO is to cease buring fossil fuels.

The solution to climate change cannot not leave us worse off, Labors plan to have their cake and eat it is just unrealistic and will have long lasting devastating ramifications for the people in the Hunter Region.
