No guarantees local papers will return to the Hunter

The print copy of local papers in the Hunter have all been axed expect two papers, The Newcastle Herald and the Port Stephens Examiner are the only survivors.

The Mercury, Cessnock Advertiser, Dungog Chronicle, Muswellbrook Chronicle, Scone Advocate, Gloucester Advocate, Lake Mail, Singleton Argus, Hunter Valley News and Newcastle Star will all shutdown from Monday.


The papers, parent company Australian Community Media has said a huge downturn in ad revenue is the reason for the immediate shutdown of local papers, but offered no guarantee that the papers would return on the other side.

The papers online sites will continue to post shared regional news and will reassess the situation at the end of June.
