Mayor of Singleton, Cr Sue Moore is calling for all candidates in the seat of Upper Hunter as well as the major parties to commit to preserving the region’s economic prosperity in the lead up to the State election on 25 March.

Singleton’s First Tranche election issues, taken from the Singleton Advocacy Agenda, focus on future proofing and livability to secure Singleton’s vitality for generations to come, with economic evolution the driving force heading to the polls.

“The Deputy Mayor, Cr Tony Jarrett and I are actively seeking meetings with candidates for the seat of Upper Hunter as well as the leaders of the major parties to highlight the needs of the Singleton community in the lead up 25 March,” Cr Moore said.

“The Upper Hunter is the third most marginal seat in NSW, and this is an important opportunity to call for action on those issues that have a significant impact on our community now and into the future.”

Taken from the Singleton Advocacy Agenda, which covers all issues important to the people of Singleton requiring government assistance, Singleton’s First Tranche issues are:

➡️ Commitment to a statutory body to drive a whole of region approach to economic evolution;
➡️ Increased passenger train services to and from Singleton;
➡️ Commitment to continuation of Resources For Regions funding program for mining-affected communities;
➡️ Continued commitment to the scope of works, timing and budget allocation for a new, purpose-built 24-hour police station for Singleton announced during the 2021 Byelection; and
➡️ Commitment for fair funding and assistance to relocate Council’s water and sewer depot as a result of the preferred route for the bypass.

As one of NSW’s biggest coal producers and prompted by conversations around the future of coal, Cr Moore said she was looking for a greater commitment from all political parties to guide Singleton and the wider Hunter Region through an economic evolution, as well as enhance Singleton’s growing residential appeal, building on its rural lifestyle and proximity to Newcastle and Sydney.

“Council has been very proactive in developing programs and strategies to support the people of Singleton through whatever economic, social and environmental changes might come our way to ensure a vibrant and sustainable future,” she said.

“But we need the support of all levels of government, and a tangible commitment from all the candidates for the seat of Upper Hunter and the major parties to achieve our community’s vision.”
