TRACES OF COVID FOUND IN HUNTER SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

Viral fragments of COVID-19 have been detected in a recent sample from the Burwood Beach sewage treatment plant.

The sample was taken as part of a NSW Health research program to test sewage for traces of COVID-19 to support the public health response to the pandemic. Sampling has commenced at a number of regional locations across NSW.

Dr David Durrheim, Hunter New England Health’s Public Health Controller for the COVID-19 response, talks about how the result was not unexpected and the importance of presenting for testing if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.
