Sending year 12 back to school could be a fatal error

The Delta outbreak has meant we need to change the way we manage the virus, and other states have learnt a big lesson from the way NSW mismanaged the Delta Variant. Lockdown hard and fast and smother the virus before it can take hold. NSW did not lockdown hard and fast and thought they could beat Delta with the 2020 playbook, unfortunately this did not work.

NSW could be about to make a grave mistake with a bold plan to vaccinate year-12 students in the lockdown hotspots and send them back to school to complete their HSC. We know that vaccinated people are less likely to die from Covid-19 than unvaccinated people, however, new data coming out of the United States suggests that vaccinated people are just as likely to spread the virus as unvaccinated people.

Having thousands of vaccinated school kids traveling around hotspot areas who can catch the virus, and they likely will, then take the virus back to their unvaccinated families could potentially prove to be a fatal mistake by the NSW government.

Let’s hope Dr Chant and Gladys are watching the Queensland school outbreak closely and find some common sense. It’s truly amazing how many well educated people lack common sense.

We get that education is important and students have worked hard throughout the year. To not get to finish this year would be disappointing, but is completing your HSC worth putting mum or dad in the ICU?
