Continual school closures not sustainable, 45 schools forced to close in two weeks across the Hunter New England Region.

It’s been a rocky start to the first two week back at school across the Hunter region, with at least 45 schools having been forced to close temporarily for deep cleaning and contact tracing, forcing teachers, students and parents into isolation.

It’s beyond a joke to expect students to be able to learn, teachers to be able to teach and parents to be able to work if schools keep closing every time someone at a school tests positive to Covid-19. This isn’t living with the virus, this is running and hiding from the virus.

Whilst it’s hard to maintain social distance and correct mask wearing in schools, it’s more important than ever that we give our children the best opportunities to learn in a stable environment.

NSW is now one of the most vaccinated regions in the world with 90% single dosed and 85% double dosed. So if the vaccine is as good as they tell us it is, there is absolutely no need to close schools for healthy students and vaccinated teachers. Whilst there’s a small percentage of kids who might be at risk due to underlying conditions, Covid-19 poses no threat to the vast majority of kids under the age of 16. The only question is how do we protect that small cohort of kids at risk?

There is no vaccine approved for kids under 12. As you and I understand, parents are concerned that kids will become infected with Covid-19, but in my opinion early exposure to the virus whilst you’re young and healthy is likely to provide you much better protection than a lifetime subscription to big pharmaceutical vaccines.

Schools must remain open at all costs to provide the best education outcomes for our children and allow parents to continue to provide for their families.
