Citizen’s arrest after joy ride leaves trail of destruction

  • Citizen’s of Rutherford perform two citizens arrests
  • A third person remains on the run
  • The car was stolen from the owner’s garage.
  • The stolen vehicle collided with a parked trailer in Rutherford

Residents of a Rutherford street performed two citizen’s arrest on Tuesday after a young person stole a motor vehicle from Rutherford. The vehicle was parked in the owner’s garage with the keys in the ignition and the garage door opened. The young person entered the garage and reversed the vehicle out of the garage colliding with the victim’s letter box.

A neighbour witnessed this and alerted the owner. A short time later the now driver of the stolen vehicle, picked up two friends where they drove around Rutherford and surrounding suburbs, taking turns to drive.

Police saturated the area in an attempted to locate the young persons due to the dangerous nature of their driving and their inexperience behind the wheel posing a danger to themselves and the public. Police observed the vehicle in Aberglasslyn and tried to pull it over.

The young person continued to drive the vehicle and shortly after collided with a trailer that was parked on the street in Rutherford, shunting it 15 meters into the front yard of a home significantly damaging the trailer and the motor vehicle.

Several residents witnessed the crash and observed the driver and two occupants decamp. Quick thinking locals nabbed two of the occupants and held them until Police arrived a short time later.

The two young persons were taken to Maitland Police Station where the main offender was charged with several offences including steal motor vehicle and police pursuit, he is currently bail refused awaiting an appearance in East Maitland children’s court. A great example of the Police and Community working together. The third male person remains unidentified and at large with investigations continuing.
