Today, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Australia’s recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to their own state
Australia has announced official recognition of the Palestinian people’s right to a state of their own, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed today.
The decision follows major new commitments from the Palestinian Authority, including governance reforms, ending prisoner payments, demilitarisation, school system changes, and plans to hold general elections.
The Palestinian Authority has also reaffirmed its recognition of Israel’s right to exist.
“This is a historic moment as the world seizes the opportunity to break the cycle of violence in the Middle East,” Mr Albanese said. “Palestinian children deserve a future that looks nothing like their reality today.”
Australia’s support forms part of broader global momentum towards a peaceful two-state solution — seen as the only viable pathway to lasting security and prosperity for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
The government said it will work closely with international partners on a credible peace plan to establish effective governance and security arrangements in Palestine while ensuring Israel’s safety.
Australia remains committed to being a constructive partner in efforts to foster peace and stability in the region.
