A 36-year-old man has been charged after allegedly displaying hate symbol tattoos at a Newcastle beach as part of a police investigation under Operation Shelter.
Police from Newcastle City Police District began inquiries after receiving a report that a man was seen at a Newcastle beach on Wednesday, 24 December 2025, with tattoos allegedly depicting designated hate symbols.
Following investigations, detectives arrested the man at a home in Urunga, south of Coffs Harbour, about 6.30pm on Saturday, 27 December 2025. He was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station and charged with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol by public act, and causing a prohibited Nazi symbol to be displayed in a public place.
The man was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, 22 January 2026.
