A shocking late-night attack has left a bus driver injured and police reeling after a violent incident near Charlestown.
Just after 11pm Wednesday, emergency services were called to the Pacific Highway following reports a bus driver had been assaulted by a passenger. Witnesses say the man allegedly punched the driver and struck his hand with a knife before fleeing the scene.
NSW Ambulance rushed the injured driver to John Hunter Hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries.
Police from the Transport Command North Central quickly launched an investigation and tracked a suspect to a bus stop on Pearson Avenue. When officers tried to arrest him, he allegedly punched a police officer in the face and attempted to flee—sparking a dramatic foot pursuit.
The 23-year-old man was caught and taken to Belmont Police Station, where he now faces a staggering five charges:
- Armed with intent to commit an indictable offence
- Reckless wounding
- Hindering/resisting police
- Assaulting a police officer
- Failing to comply with lawful direction
Bail was refused, and he is set to appear in Bail Division Court 2 today.
Authorities are warning the public about the dangers of violent incidents on public transport and emphasizing the zero-tolerance approach for attacks on frontline workers.
