Emergency services rushed to Leggetts Drive after a serious crash left a teenage boy fighting for life and hundreds of homes without power.
A teenage boy is fighting for his life after a devastating single-vehicle crash at Pelaw Main on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Leggetts Drive near HEZ Drive around 3:45pm on March 10 after reports a car had crashed into a power pole.
The impact was severe, leaving the teenager critically injured and triggering a major emergency response.
Police, paramedics, and fire crews quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured driver and secure the crash site.
The teenage boy was treated by paramedics before being rushed to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.
Authorities say the force of the crash destroyed a power pole, forcing the closure of Leggetts Drive in both directions while crews worked to make the area safe.
Motorists have been warned to avoid the area and use diversions, with traffic being redirected through Palmers Road, the M1 Pacific Motorway, the Hunter Expressway and John Renshaw Drive.
The crash also triggered a major power outage across Pelaw Main and surrounding areas.
Energy provider Ausgrid confirmed hundreds of homes lost electricity after the vehicle struck the pole.
Repair crews were dispatched to the scene, with early estimates suggesting power could be restored around 7pm Tuesday evening, depending on the extent of the damage.
Authorities have not yet confirmed what caused the crash.
Serious crashes involving power poles can create additional risks for both motorists and emergency responders.
When a pole is struck, electricity networks often need to isolate power immediately to prevent further hazards such as live wires or fires.
These incidents frequently lead to widespread outages while crews replace infrastructure and restore the network.
News of the crash quickly spread across social media, with many locals expressing concern for the injured teenager.
Residents in the area also reported the sudden blackout and traffic disruption as emergency services worked at the scene.
Others urged drivers to slow down on local roads and keep the injured teen in their thoughts.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage from the area is being urged to contact authorities.
