Fernleigh Track Horror: Rider Allegedly Rams Police Officer Before Dramatic Crash

A man will face court after a police officer was allegedly struck by a motorbike during a high-visibility police operation in the Lake Macquarie area on Thursday.

About 11.30am (Thursday 16 April 2026), officers from Lake Macquarie Police District were conducting high-visibility patrols on e-bikes along the Fernleigh Track in Kahibah, following reports of anti-social behaviour.

While speaking with a 14-year-old boy on the track, police say an unregistered motorbike ridden by a 47-year-old man approached the area. Officers identified themselves and directed the rider to stop.

Police will allege the man failed to comply and continued riding towards officers, striking one officer in the arm with the motorbike. The rider then collided with a stationary police e-bike, causing damage, before crashing into a nearby guard rail.

The man was arrested at the scene and taken to Belmont Police Station.

The injured officer was not seriously hurt and did not require hospital treatment.

Following the arrest, police searched the motorbike and allegedly located and seized an unauthorised cardboard number plate along with two knives. The items will undergo forensic examination.

The man has been charged with seven offences, including dangerous driving, custody of a knife in a public place, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, using a vehicle with an unauthorised number plate, and malicious damage.

Police will allege in court the cardboard number plate was registered to a different vehicle and another person.

He was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 on Friday 17 April 2026.
