Cessnock, September 17, 2024 — In a landmark electoral upset, Daniel Watton has secured the mayoral position in Cessnock, ending Labor’s long-standing control of the role. With only a handful of votes remaining to be counted, Watton has achieved a decisive lead, receiving 49.41% of the vote compared to incumbent Jay Suvaal’s 42.39%.
Watton’s victory marks the first time since 2008 that an Independent candidate has claimed the mayoral seat in Cessnock, highlighting a significant shift in local political dynamics. The Green Party’s Llynda Nairn garnered 8.20% of the vote.
In his victory speech, Watton expressed deep gratitude to the Cessnock community. “Wow, what a HISTORIC result! Thank you, Cessnock, for putting your trust in me and voting for change. I am very humbled by all of your support and cannot wait to get to work,” Watton said.
He praised his campaign team and volunteers for their hard work and dedication, reflecting on the contrasts between this year’s campaign and previous efforts. “Thank you for all of your time and dedication. None of this is possible without your involvement,” he added.
Watton also extended heartfelt thanks to his family, describing them as his greatest support. “Regardless of any election outcome, I’ve already won in life because of you all.”
He concluded his remarks by acknowledging outgoing Mayor Jay Suvaal’s service and wishing him and his family the best for the future.
The election results have sparked celebrations among Watton’s supporters, marking a new chapter for Cessnock’s local governance.
