In a dramatic late-night rescue, two men were saved by Lake Macquarie Police after their boat capsized near Marks Point. The incident took place around 11 PM on Sunday, 23 September 2024. The men, aged 41 and 32, were fishing from a small aluminium boat about 500 metres north of Marks Point Marina when their vessel became unbalanced and overturned.
The sudden capsize threw the men into the water, forcing them to cling to the sinking boat to stay afloat. Neither of the men were wearing life jackets, making their situation even more perilous. Realizing the danger, they immediately called Triple Zero for help.
Police swiftly responded by borrowing a jet ski and life jackets from a nearby resident. They quickly located the men and provided them with life jackets. Another helpful neighbor then used their own boat to assist police in bringing the men safely back to shore.
This rescue serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of wearing life jackets while on the water, as well as the community’s vital role in emergency situations.
