A tragic single-vehicle crash has claimed the life of an elderly man in Newcastle today.
At approximately 4:30 PM, emergency services were urgently dispatched to a petrol station on Maitland Road, Mayfield, following distressing reports of a serious accident. The driver of a Toyota Camry, a man believed to be in his 80s, crashed into a fuel bowser while attempting to leave the station.
NSW Ambulance paramedics swiftly arrived at the scene and provided immediate medical attention to the sole occupant of the vehicle. Despite their efforts, the man was transported to Calvary Mater Hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
The identity of the deceased driver has yet to be formally confirmed.
The Newcastle City Police District has commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to this fatal incident. A comprehensive report will be prepared for the Coroner.
