Australia Sets New Record for Warmest Winter Day
Australia has experienced an unprecedented heat wave this winter, breaking several temperature records on Saturday. Central parts of the country, including Oodnadatta, Leigh Creek, Moomba, and Andamooka, saw record-breaking temperatures on Friday that were surpassed on Saturday.
Oodnadatta made headlines with its daytime temperature reaching a staggering 39.4°C, the highest winter maximum temperature ever recorded in South Australia. Additionally, the town recorded an overnight minimum temperature of 23.4°C, marking the warmest winter minimum temperature on record for the state.
The unusual warmth extended into the night, with several locations also setting new records for August overnight temperatures. The heat wave is expected to persist, with above-average temperatures forecasted across much of the continent. Northern regions of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland will experience daytime temperatures peaking in the mid to high 30s, with some areas in the western Kimberley possibly exceeding 40°C in the coming days.
