Teen Arrested After Fatal Stabbing at Melbourne Shopping Centre
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal stabbing of another teenage boy at the Woodgrove Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s west.
Emergency services were called to the outdoor food court at the shopping centre on High Street in Melton West just before midday on Tuesday. Upon arrival, authorities found a 16-year-old boy with life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of a bystander who administered CPR, the teenager could not be revived and tragically died at the scene.
Police have confirmed that the 15-year-old suspect has been arrested and is expected to be interviewed by homicide detectives.
Detective Senior Sergeant Nigel L’Estrange addressed the media on Tuesday afternoon, revealing that the victim had been stabbed “several times” during an altercation with the other teen. The incident reportedly began with a verbal argument that escalated into a physical confrontation. Police believe the two teenagers knew each other.
“It’s a senseless act… a young man whose life has been taken away, and we’ve got a family who would be grieving now,” Det Snr Sgt L’Estrange said.
Police do not believe the incident is linked to gang activity, and no charges have been laid at this stage.
The 16-year-old victim had been dropped off at the shopping centre earlier in the day by his mother, who is now assisting police with their investigation.
