Drug drivers have been caught at alarming rates across the Hunter and Port Stephens, with police revealing almost one in seven motorists tested during a major road operation allegedly returned positive results.
The high-visibility traffic operation was launched in response to increasing fatal and serious injury crashes, along with ongoing anti-social driving behaviour across the region.
During the crackdown, officers conducted 7,597 random breath tests, with 35 drivers allegedly returning positive readings.
Police also carried out 649 roadside drug tests, with 92 drivers allegedly testing positive — equating to roughly one in every seven motorists screened.
All 92 drivers underwent secondary testing, with samples sent away for further forensic analysis.
Authorities also issued 1,008 infringement notices during the operation, including three to drivers allegedly caught travelling more than 45km/h over the speed limit.
A further 45 people were charged with alleged traffic and criminal offences.
NSW Police say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce dangerous driving behaviour and improve road safety across the Hunter and Port Stephens regions.
