Emergency services were called to Newcastle beach around 11pm last night to assist a young man who was pulled out of the ocean with suspected spinal injuries after diving head first into the ocean and hit his head on a sandbank.
The man was air lifed to the Royal Prince Alfred hospital for treatment.
