Newcastle radio station 2HD’s general manager Guy Ashford has been suspended following an alleged inappropriate incident involving presenter Cheralyn Darcey during the 2026 Australian Audio Awards in Sydney.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday night at Carriageworks, where Darcey was accepting the “Best Newcomer On Air – Medium” award for her program The Nightline.
Video recorded by audience members allegedly shows Ashford rushing onto the stage to congratulate Darcey before embracing and twirling her around. The footage then appears to show him grabbing her backside in front of the crowd. Audience members could reportedly be heard gasping during the incident.
The Super Radio Network, which owns 2HD and Sydney station 2SM, confirmed Ashford had been suspended from his duties while the matter is investigated.
SRN managing director Graham Mott said he had apologised to Darcey and her husband following the incident.
“We will be having further discussions regarding the matter,” Mott told media outlets.
Several media organisations reported that multiple attendees at the awards expressed shock over what unfolded on stage, with footage of the moment circulating online shortly after the event.
Despite the controversy, Darcey later shared a message thanking supporters after winning the national award.
Ashford has worked in Australian radio for decades and previously served as general manager of 2HD and NEWFM before returning to the role in 2021. (newcastleweekly.com.au)
