Denman residents were rattled this afternoon after a massive explosion-like impact ripped through the roof of a local home — and crews on scene believe the most likely culprit is a meteorite.
Emergency crews arrived to find a 2-metre wide hole punched through the tiled roof, with dozens of tiles blasted off and some hurled over 40 metres away. Firefighters in breathing apparatus cleared the roof cavity and confirmed there was no fire, no hazardous materials, and — importantly — no object inside the house.

Investigators say the damage was caused by a small, extremely fast-moving object that hit the roof, struck the timber beneath, but didn’t fully penetrate into the living space. Only a few tiles shattered into fragments, suggesting the object either disintegrated on impact or was deflected back out.
The impact was so loud it was heard across the entire block.

While the chances of being hit by a meteorite are famously tiny — about 1 in 840 million — around 40 tonnes of meteoritic material hits Earth every single day. And after ruling out every other scenario, crews say a meteorite remains the only explanation that fits the evidence.
But they’re throwing it open to the public:
