A deadly night in the Hunter Valley has sparked a manhunt after a wild burnout ended in tragedy — and a mysterious car fire.
Just after midnight on Sunday, June 29, police rushed to a fire trail off Haul Road near Stockrington, southeast of Kurri Kurri, following reports that a modified Ford Fairmont performing burnouts had mowed down three people — killing one.
A 53-year-old man died from horrific head injuries. Two women were also allegedly struck but vanished from the scene before emergency services arrived.
The vehicle believed to be involved was later found torched on McFarlanes Road in Chisholm just before 3am, in what police suspect was an attempt to destroy evidence.
A full-scale investigation is underway with forensic officers examining the burnt wreck and crime scenes established at both locations.
Detectives are urgently appealing for the driver to come forward, and are asking anyone with footage or information — including dashcam or mobile video — to contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
