Cessnock Council has voted to formally approach Targa Australia with a bold proposal: to bring one of the country’s premier tarmac rally events to the Hunter Valley. The move could position the region as a new motorsport destination, injecting millions into the local economy.
The proposed event would follow in the footsteps of Targa Tasmania and Targa Great Barrier Reef, both of which attract hundreds of competitors and tens of thousands of spectators. Targa Tasmania alone brings in an estimated $15–$20 million annually to the local economy through accommodation, dining, tourism, and support services.
If approved, a Hunter Valley Targa rally could wind through some of the region’s most iconic roads and vineyards, with potential stages through Mount View, Wollombi, Broke, and the scenic Bimbadeen Road near Pokolbin. Spectator-friendly zones could be established near wineries, lookouts, and town centres—offering both a motorsport thrill and a tourism boost
With Targa events drawing up to 200,000 spectators in other regions, the Hunter Valley stands to benefit from full hotels, bustling restaurants, and increased winery traffic. Local businesses, including mechanics, caterers, and event coordinators, could also see a spike in demand.
Council will now initiate talks with Targa Australia to explore feasibility, costs, and road approvals, with a view to potentially hosting the first Hunter Valley Targa within the next two years.
MHV News will follow developments closely as planning begins for what could become a flagship motorsport event for the region.
