Cessnock Council has voted in favor of initiating discussions with the NSW Government, Destination NSW, and the Supercars organization to potentially host the Cessnock Wine Country 500.
Proposed by Cessnock Mayor Jay Suvaal in a Mayoral Minute, the decision garnered support from all councilors except John Moores. While some expressed reservations due to the absence of cost estimates, Jessica Jurd cited Newcastle City Council’s $1.6 million expenditure for hosting a similar event.
Mayor Suvaal clarified that the vote signaled a willingness to explore possibilities rather than a commitment to hosting the event. Emphasizing the potential economic windfall, he envisioned a surge in visitors to the Hunter Valley, benefitting local businesses.
