Council Shuts Down Iconic Rail Museum: Community Outraged

Community Reacts to Closure of Richmond Vale Rail Museum Amid Safety Concerns

The closure of the Richmond Vale Rail Museum by Cessnock City Council has elicited mixed reactions from the community, with many expressing disappointment over the loss of a cherished historical site, while others acknowledge the need for safety compliance.

In an official statement, a Council spokesperson highlighted the extensive support provided to the Richmond Vale Preservation Co-operative Society over the past four decades, including financial assistance and infrastructure repairs. However, concerns regarding safety compliance, particularly related to Work Health & Safety documentation and mandatory insurances, prompted the council to issue a cessation order.

Council officers had been working with the society since the expiration of the previous license, addressing structural issues and asbestos exposure following fires. Despite granting extensions, the documentation provided by the society did not meet safety requirements, leading to the closure on March 7, 2024.

While Council has reached out to assist the society in meeting its obligations and ensuring safety at the site, the offer has not been accepted thus far. Additionally, Council has informed the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator about the matter and is committed to working with them to address safety concerns.

The closure has left the community reflecting on the importance of preserving heritage sites while also acknowledging the necessity of ensuring public and volunteer safety. As discussions continue between the council and the society, stakeholders remain hopeful for a resolution that balances heritage preservation with safety compliance.
