Emergency services were called to Louth Park yesterday afternoon after a cow became trapped with its head stuck in a tree, leading to a chain of injuries during the rescue attempt.
A man was injured while trying to assist the animal before emergency crews arrived on scene. The Cessnock District Rescue Squad and NSW Ambulance responded to the incident.
Due to difficult, muddy terrain, rescue operators used a 4WD vehicle to transport the injured man to a location where paramedics could provide treatment.
While medical care was underway, rescue crews worked to free the cow. A section of the tree was cut away before hydraulic spreaders were used to create enough space to safely remove the animal.
The farmer involved in the incident had also been kicked by the cow and required hospital assessment.
The cow was successfully freed and returned to its herd. The man was transported to hospital for further treatment.
