News Update: Detectives Reappeal for Information on Diver’s Disappearance – Strike Force Groove
On the two-year anniversary of Brazilian diver Bruno Borges Martins’ tragic death, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad are renewing their appeal for information regarding the whereabouts of fellow diver, 32-year-old Jhoni Fernandes Da Silva, who went missing in the Newcastle area.
The incident dates back to May 9, 2022, when emergency services responded to a distress call at the Port of Newcastle, discovering Martins unresponsive in the water alongside 54kg of cocaine. Despite efforts, Martins could not be revived.
Since then, an extensive investigation led by the Strike Force Groove, comprising officers from various law enforcement agencies including the Australian Federal Police, Australian Border Force, Northern Territory Police, and Queensland Police Service, has been underway. Two individuals have been charged and are currently facing court proceedings.
As part of ongoing efforts, detectives have released images of a white Mitsubishi Fuso truck with the NSW registration DA81PP, believed to be linked to Da Silva’s disappearance. The truck was last spotted heading southbound on the M4 Motorway, Pennant Hills, on May 8, 2022, around 6:30 PM. Additionally, information about a Toyota Townace Van with the NSW registration WNY439, seen traveling with the truck, is being sought.
Commander of the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad, Detective Superintendent Peter Faux, emphasized the importance of closure for the family and community affected by these events. He urged anyone with information to come forward, providing much-needed answers to Da Silva’s loved ones after two years of uncertainty.
