Horror Shark Attack at Crowdy Bay Leaves Young Woman Dead and Man Fighting for Life
A peaceful early-morning swim at one of New South Wales’ most scenic coastal hideaways has ended in tragedy, after a shark attack claimed the life of a woman in her 20s and left a man critically injured at Crowdy Bay National Park.
Emergency services were called to Kylies Beach just after 6:30 am on Thursday following frantic reports that two swimmers had been mauled by a shark near the popular campground. Witnesses rushed to pull both victims from the water, desperately trying to render aid before paramedics could reach the remote stretch of shoreline.
Despite the efforts of bystanders and first responders, the woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The man, also believed to be in his 20s, suffered severe traumatic wounds and was stabilised on the beach before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he remains in critical condition.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the Mid North Coast community, raising renewed questions about beach safety at unpatrolled, isolated coastal areas. Crowdy Bay, known for its rugged beauty and secluded campsites, does not have lifesaving patrols — a reality Surf Life Saving NSW emphasised in the aftermath of the incident.
Authorities have closed the beach immediately and launched an investigation in partnership with the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Drone surveillance has been deployed to scan the coastline for signs of the shark, while experts work to determine the species responsible. Non-lethal monitoring equipment, including smart drumlines, is also being considered as part of the search effort.
This tragedy marks another fatal shark incident in a year that has already seen multiple serious encounters in NSW waters, prompting marine experts to warn swimmers to stay vigilant, particularly at dawn and in remote areas without lifeguards.
Local residents, holiday-makers and campers are being urged to avoid entering the water at Crowdy Bay until authorities declare the area safe. A full report will be prepared for the coroner.
