Kurri Kurri residents are being warned to expect another round of testing at the Snowy Hydro Gas Plant starting Sunday, 24 August 2025, with Federal MP for Hunter Dan Repacholi promising stricter safeguards after July’s fiasco.
July Drama Still Fresh
Last month, testing caused heavy smoke and odour across the Hunter, sparking frustration and complaints. Mr Repacholi said he was critical of Snowy Hydro at the time for not being upfront with the community.
What’s Different This Time
According to Mr Repacholi, Snowy Hydro has made changes to avoid a repeat:
✅ Testing runs 3pm – 10am daily, 24 August to 6 September
✅ Turbines start on gas before switching to diesel – cutting odour and smoke
✅ Increased monitoring by NSW EPA and Snowy Hydro
✅ Immediate shutdown if problems occur
“The last gas test passed without issue, and I’ve been assured this diesel testing will be smoother,” Mr Repacholi said.

Community Still Wary
Despite reassurances, many locals remain cautious. “People are right to be wary,” Mr Repacholi admitted.
