A man has been charged following a fatal crash in Mayfield East at the weekend that claimed the lives of two young passengers.
Just after 11.15pm on Saturday (30 August 2025), emergency services were called to Maitland Road after a Toyota Corolla left the road, struck a power pole and caught fire.
The 24-year-old driver and a 19-year-old passenger were pulled from the burning vehicle by members of the public. Both suffered minor injuries and were taken to John Hunter Hospital.
Two other passengers – men aged 20 and 21 – were rushed to hospital but later died.
Police established a crime scene, with the Crash Investigation Unit taking over inquiries.
Today (Tuesday 2 September), the 24-year-old driver was charged with eight offences, including:
- Dangerous driving occasioning death (two counts)
- Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm
- Negligent driving occasioning death (two counts)
- Negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm
- Negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm)
- Cause bodily harm by misconduct while in charge of a motor vehicle
He was refused bail and is set to appear before Bail Division Court 2 tomorrow (Wednesday 3 September 2025).
