Emergency crews worked late into the night after a serious crash on Maitland Road in Cessnock left a driver trapped in their vehicle.
At 10:13pm last night, rescue teams were called to the scene where it was confirmed the driver was pinned by both compression and confinement following a high-impact collision.
Specialist operators stabilised the vehicle while paramedics provided urgent treatment to the injured man, who had sustained multiple severe injuries.
Rescuers used a range of hydraulic tools, including rams, cutters and spreaders, to carefully free the driver. Once extricated, he was placed on a spine board and airlifted by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to hospital for further treatment.
Multiple agencies worked together at the scene, including Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance, NSW Police, and VRA Rescue NSW.
Authorities have praised the teamwork of all involved in the challenging rescue.
