Fallen drum causes large oil spill on rail crossing at Kearsley Hill

Emergency services and council workers were called to the top of Kearsley Hill on Saturday morning to deal with a large oil spill caused by a fallen drum from a truck. The incident created a hazardous situation for drivers on the “S” bend, but thanks to the quick and efficient response of the Cessnock Fire and Rescue team and Cessnock City Council crew, the area was made safe after a few hours of intensive work.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a thick layer of oil covering the rail crossing and the road, and urged drivers to exercise extreme caution. The incident was reported to the authorities, who dispatched a joint team of firefighters and council workers to the scene. The team used sand and a sweeper to contain and remove the oil, which had spread over a wide area.

A spokesperson for Cessnock Fire and Rescue praised the coordination and cooperation between the emergency services and the council crew. “We are grateful to have such a strong partnership with the council, which enables us to respond quickly and effectively to incidents like this,” the spokesperson said. “Our firefighters worked closely with the council workers to ensure the safety of the public and the environment.”

The incident caused some traffic disruptions and delays, but no injuries or accidents were reported. The authorities advised drivers to avoid the affected area if possible and to follow the directions of the traffic controllers. They also warned drivers to secure their loads properly and to report any spills or hazards they observe on the road.

The cleanup operation was completed by midday, and the authorities thanked the public for their patience and understanding during the process. They advised drivers to exercise caution when driving on wet or slippery roads and to check the council’s website or social media channels for updates on road conditions and maintenance works.
