Maitland is heading into the hottest months of the year without its main swimming facility, with the city’s 50-metre pool to remain closed through spring and into the start of summer.
The closure has left families frustrated, with locals saying they have nowhere suitable to cool off in the high-growth region. Community members argue the problem has been years in the making, with Maitland’s ageing pools falling further into disrepair each season.
“The more we look, the more problems we find,” one advocate said, calling on Council to commit to a brand-new aquatic centre and a plan to replace outdated facilities.
A Royal Life Saving Society report has warned of a looming crisis in aquatic infrastructure nationwide, stressing the importance of swimming pools for safety, health and the development of future champions.
Residents are now demanding urgent action, with calls for Maitland Council to work with neighbouring councils and the private sector to deliver modern pools before another summer leaves the community high and dry.
