Evacuation orders surrounding a major structure fire in Newcastle’s Mayfield area have been significantly scaled back, with most residents now allowed to return home.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Denison Street and Maitland Road at about 3.30pm on Monday (18 May 2026) following reports of a large structure fire.

Authorities have now confirmed that evacuation orders in the wider Mayfield and Hamilton areas have been revised. The only remaining exclusion zone applies to three properties on the odd-number side of Denison Street between the fireground and Waratah Street.

All other affected residents have been cleared to return to their homes.

Power restoration is also underway, with supply expected to be reconnected shortly.

Residents are being urged to exercise caution when returning, with authorities warning that if any suspicious or potentially contaminated items are found, they should not be touched. Instead, they should be reported to the NSW Environment Protection Authority on 131 555.
