A woman has been charged with attempted murder following a violent domestic violence-related attack that left a 71-year-old woman seriously injured in Lake Macquarie.
Emergency services were called to Charles Street at Blackalls Park about 4.30pm on Sunday, 1 February 2026, after reports of a brutal assault.
Police allege a 39-year-old woman attacked the elderly woman — who was known to her — using both a hammer and a knife. The accused allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle that had been stolen from Narara Street at Fassifern.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the victim at the scene before she was transported to John Hunter Hospital, where she remains in a serious but stable condition.
A crime scene was established as detectives from Lake Macquarie Police District launched an investigation. During a search of the area, police located the stolen vehicle crashed and abandoned on Fassifern Road.
Following a search of nearby bushland, officers arrested the 39-year-old woman and took her to Toronto Police Station.
She was charged with three serious offences:
- Cause grievous bodily harm with intent to murder (domestic violence-related)
- Contravene a domestic violence AVO
- Take and drive a conveyance without the owner’s consent
The woman was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today, Monday 2 February 2026.
Police investigations are continuing.
