Hamilton South, NSW – A high-speed police chase through the Newcastle area culminated in a dramatic car fire and the arrest of a man and woman on Thursday, December 7th, 2023.
Just after 10:30 AM, officers attempted to stop a white SUV on Fowler Street in Hamilton South. Allegedly, the vehicle refused to stop, prompting a high-speed pursuit. Due to safety concerns, the chase was terminated shortly after.
With the assistance of the police helicopter (PolAir), the suspect vehicle was tracked down to Sygna Close in Rankin Park. A passenger, a 26-year-old woman, was apprehended nearby and taken to the Waratah Police Station. She was later transferred to the hospital for assessment.
The SUV continued driving erratically before veering off the road and crashing on McCaffrey Drive in Rankin Park. The vehicle burst into flames, requiring the intervention of Fire and Rescue NSW to extinguish the blaze.
The driver, a 27-year-old man, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to John Hunter Hospital in serious but stable condition.
Police have cordoned off the scene and commenced a thorough investigation into the incident. They are urging anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward
