A historic general store and adjoining residential building have been destroyed by a major fire at Menangle in the Wollondilly region overnight.

Firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW responded to the blaze on Station Street, with more than 15 fire trucks required to bring the fire under control.

Crews worked throughout the morning to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.

Local road closures remain in place as emergency services continue operations at the scene.

Despite the scale of the blaze, there have been no reports of injuries.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, with fire investigators expected to examine the scene throughout the day.
