EDGEWORTH – Tuesday, 5 August 2025 | MHV News
A 14-year-old Chinese exchange student has died after being stabbed inside a host family home in Edgeworth, with another 13-year-old exchange student now in custody.
Emergency services were called to Euston Close just after 10.20pm on Monday night following reports of a stabbing. When officers from Lake Macquarie Police District arrived, they found the teenager with a stab wound to her torso.
She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being rushed to John Hunter Hospital in critical condition. Sadly, she died a short time later. The girl is yet to be formally identified.
A 13-year-old girl – also a Chinese exchange student staying with the same host family – was arrested at the scene and is currently assisting police with inquiries. It’s understood she had arrived in Australia just over a week ago.
Police have established Strike Force Agnes to investigate the fatal incident, with specialist homicide detectives from the State Crime Command assisting local officers. A kitchen knife, believed to be the weapon used, has been seized for forensic testing.
The host family was reportedly asleep at the time of the incident and were alerted by a disturbance in one of the bedrooms. Authorities are now working closely with the exchange program organisers and the Chinese consulate as investigations continue.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
